Here are seven signs that water may be hiding behind your walls.
1. Discoloration or Water Stains
Brown, yellow, or copper-colored stains on walls and ceilings are classic signs of moisture intrusion. You may also spot dark patches or discoloration that gradually expands over time.
An old-looking stain does not necessarily mean it is an old problem. If stains change size, shape, or color, moisture may still be present.
Lightly mark the edge of a suspicious stain with a pencil. If the discoloration spreads beyond the mark, you may have an active leak.
2. Peeling, Bubbling, or Flaking Paint
Paint and wallpaper need a dry surface to remain properly adhered. When moisture accumulates behind drywall, the surface begins to:
- Bubble
- Blister
- Peel
- Crack
- Flake
These changes often appear long before visible water damage.
Do not simply repaint damaged areas. Identify and repair the moisture source first, or that fresh coat of paint may not stay fresh for long.

5. Unexpected Mold Growth

Moisture has likely spread farther into the structure than you can see if you spot mold near:
- Baseboards
- Corners
- Plumbing fixtures
- Wall seams
Cleaning visible mold without addressing the underlying moisture problem may only provide a temporary fix.
6. Higher Than Normal Water Bills
Your walls may look fine while your water bill tells a different story. An unexplained spike in water usage often points to a concealed plumbing leak.

Turn off water-using appliances and fixtures, then check whether your water meter continues registering usage. Movement may indicate a leak.
7. Unexplained Dripping or Running Water Sounds
If you hear dripping, trickling, or running water when no faucets or appliances are operating, do not write it off as common house noises.
Water moving inside your wall could indicate a serious plumbing leak that needs immediate attention.
Take note of when and where you hear the sound. Whether it happens constantly or only after using a fixture may provide useful clues when locating the source.
